Local Sports Digest: Stanford’s Johnny Dawkins Will Participate In Final 4 …

Stanfords Johnny Dawkins was picked as a head coach for the Reeses Division I College All-Star game Friday at ATamp; T Arena in Arlington, Texas.

He will coach the West All-Stars, headlined by Cals Justin Cobbs. Marylands Mark Turgeon will coach the East All-Stars in a game that will be part of the Final 4 weekend activities.

Stanford lost to Dayton on Thursday in the NCAA competitions Sugary food 16.

  • Cals Missy Franklin and Stanfords Maya DiRado and Felicia Lee were amongst the nominees for the Honda Sports Award for womens swimming and diving. Other finalists were Breeja Larson of Texas Aamp; M and Brittany MacLean of Georgia.
  • Cal (14-12) will host Stanford (10-11) in a nonconference baseball video game Tuesday at Evans Diamond. First pitch is 7 pm
  • Cal and San Jose State will compete at the NCAAMinneapolis womens gymnastics local Saturday. Other groups in the regional are Oklahoma, Minnesota, Illinois and Southern Utah. Stanford will compete in the Baton Rouge (La.) Regional against LSU, Auburn, Arizona, Kent State and Iowa State. The leading 2 teams in each regional will get automatic berths to the NCAA Championships in Tuscaloosa, Ala., on April 18-20.
  • Stanford freshman Akash Modi was named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Gymnast of the Year and Thom Glielmi was Co-Coach of the Year. Modi won conference titles in the all-around and parallel bars. Stanford will seek its sixth NCAA Championships title in Ann Arbor, Mich., on April 10-12.

    A British sailor was saved after falling crazy in the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race and spending 1 hours in the north Pacific. Officials state 46-year-old Andrew Taylor, a crewman on Derry-Londonderry-Doire, was being dealt with for severe shock and possible hypothermia.

    Officials state he went over the side throughout a sail modification during Day 14 of the race that is presently moving towards San Francisco from Qingdao, China. The first watercrafts are expected to complete under the Golden Gate Bridge on April 11. The race started in London on Sept. 1, 2013, and go back to St. Katharine Docks in July 2014.

    The Classic Sports Racing Group (CSRG) kicks off its 47th period at Sonoma Raceway with the David Love Memorial Vintage Races on Saturday and Sunday. Love was a long time Bay Area local and CSRG co-founder who passed away in 2013.
